Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, or BRA Day, organized by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, is an annual event held to raise awareness about breast reconstruction options. Since its origination in 2012, the event aims to inform women of their choices for reconstruction following a mastectomy or lumpectomy due to breast cancer or other health conditions. BRA Day seeks to provide education, support, and access to those considering or undergoing breast reconstruction.
The purpose of BRA Day is multifaceted:
Education: To educate women about their breast reconstruction rights and the options available.
Support: To provide support for women undergoing breast cancer treatment and considering reconstruction.
Awareness: To raise public awareness of breast reconstruction and dispel myths or misconceptions.
Women may seek breast reconstruction for several reasons:
Restoration of Appearance: To restore the breast's shape and appearance after a mastectomy or lumpectomy.
Psychological and Emotional Benefits: Reconstruction can help improve self-esteem, body image, and emotional well-being after breast cancer surgery.
Symmetry: In cases of single breast removal, reconstruction can restore symmetry to the body.
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to rebuild the shape and look of a breast, typically after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. The reconstruction may use implants (saline or silicone) or autologous tissue (tissue from other parts of the patient's body, like the abdomen or back).
The timing of breast reconstruction can vary; it may be performed immediately following the breast cancer surgery (immediate reconstruction) or months to years later (delayed reconstruction).
BRA Day plays a crucial role in empowering women with knowledge and resources regarding breast reconstruction. Through educational events, discussions with healthcare professionals, and shared personal experiences, BRA Day helps women make informed decisions about their reconstructive options and supports them through their breast cancer journey.
